Michael Shurtleff’s 12 Guidepost for Auditioning \u2022 1. Relationships<\/strong><\/p>\n

To begin with — do not worry if you don’t know the full story of the play or musical you are auditioning for. (Although it would be wise to familiarize yourself with the script prior to the audition, if possible.) — But in any case, make a choice, any choice. If you are re-directed by the Audition Team, take their direction and try it again. If they give you direction, they are interested in seeing how you work.<\/p>\n

    1. What is my relationship to other characters in the scene? (Again — if you don’t know, make it up — it’s called “ACTING.”)\n

      1. Personal<\/li>\n
      2. Business<\/li>\n
      3. Social<\/li>\n
      4. Never met<\/li>\n
      5. What do you know\/suppose about them? What do they suppose\/know about you?<\/li>\n
      6. Use your imagination.<\/li>\n
      7. No relationship — no chemistry — no DRAMA!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
      8. Where is the love?\n
          \n
        1. Is it a spiritual kind of love, felt deep within?<\/li>\n
        2. Is it a purely physical attraction, momentary in nature?<\/li>\n
        3. Is it a crush?<\/li>\n
        4. Is it a long-term relationship?<\/li>\n
        5. Is this love ‘anti-love’?<\/li>\n
        6. Are you playful, cautious, bold, shy, scheming and ready to dish the dirt, full of compliments?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
        7. Love comes in many forms.\n

          1. Are you sincere?<\/li>\n
          2. Are you clueless? (Never been in love before) or (are you an old pro?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
          3. \u201cThe desire for love, to give it or receive it, and preferably both simultaneously, is the chief propellant in human beings.\u201d\n

            1. Love and affection, and their opposites, are the necessities of human relationships.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
