The long-suffering wife of Sganarelle, a woodcutter and former doctor\u2019s assistant, decides to avenge herself for her husband\u2019s neglect and abuse.\u00a0She convinces two servants who are seeking a physician that they must beat her brilliant but eccentric husband until he admits to being a doctor.\u00a0 When confronted by the servants, Sganarelle repeatedly denies any knowledge of medicine, but when they beat him, he decides to go along with their presumption. Sganarelle is brought by the servants to their master whose daughter has become mute.\u00a0 \u00a0He makes an effective pretense of trying to cure the daughter, quoting Latin and doing what he has seen other doctors do.\u00a0 The lover of the master\u2019s daughter confides to Sganarelle that the young woman is faking muteness in order to escape an unwanted marriage to an old man.\u00a0 Sganarelle helps the young lovers to elope but in doing so puts his own life in jeopardy.\u00a0 Sganarelle is rescued from hanging when the lovers return and the young man announces that his rich uncle has died, conveniently making him a suitable suitor.\u00a0 Sganarelle is forgiven and returns home with his wife, insisting that she must respect him now that he has become a doctor.<\/p>\n
