The character of Mitja, the protagonist, was suggested by the case of Sergej Kourdakov, a young defector with a similar background, who, in 1973, is believed to have been murdered by the KGB in the foothills of Los Angeles&#8211;ostensibly a suicide.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Artwork from a Trevor Southey painting.
