by Moliere (Jean Baptiste Poquelin)
Adapted & Translated by J.D. Newman
(Perfect for Professional, College/University, Community, High School, Middle School, and other Youth Theatre Groups)
The long-suffering wife of Sganarelle, a woodcutter and former doctor’s assistant, decides to avenge herself for her husband’s neglect and abuse. She convinces two servants who are seeking a physician that they must beat her brilliant but eccentric husband until he admits to being a doctor. When confronted by the servants, Sganarelle repeatedly denies any knowledge of medicine, but when they beat him, he decides to go along with their presumption. Sganarelle is brought by the servants to their master whose daughter has become mute. He makes an effective pretense of trying to cure the daughter, quoting Latin and doing what he has seen other doctors do. The lover of the master’s daughter confides to Sganarelle that the young woman is faking muteness in order to escape an unwanted marriage to an old man. Sganarelle helps the young lovers to elope but in doing so puts his own life in jeopardy. Sganarelle is rescued from hanging when the lovers return and the young man announces that his rich uncle has died, conveniently making him a suitable suitor. Sganarelle is forgiven and returns home with his wife, insisting that she must respect him now that he has become a doctor.
