This adaptation of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn follows Mark Twain’s novel from Huck running away from The Widow Douglas to join Jim for their adventures down the Mississippi River. They encounter the King and the Duke; get involved in a Shakespearian production of “Romeo and Juliet,” are joined by Tom Sawyer and end up at Aunt Sally’s, where Jim is freed and Huck takes off for “Injun Territory.” The songs are sprightly and evocative and some are just plain beautiful like Jim’s song about Freedom. This show has so much inside it, like its novel predecessor, that it cannot help but speak to a modern audience; a group of human beings embroiled in the very same political and social climate that was present over 150 years ago. But it is also a testament to a loving father and son relationship, which the whole journey was about in the first place.
