Book by C. Michael Perry & Coni Koepfinger
Music and Lyrics by C. Michael Perry
(For production by Professional Groups, College/University Groups, Community Groups, High Schools, Church Groups, Youth Theatres)
This is Dickens’ other Christmas carol. The magic of life is evident in the Peerybingle household with a happy marriage and a newborn son. Two houses are blessed by the lucky Crickets: The Peerybingles, the Plummers with Mr. Tackleton’s awaiting the blessing of life and love.. Everyone’s paths are soon to cross with Tackleton, a disgruntled toymaker, who hates all humanity except May Fielding. He lives to make people miserable — especially children — as his toys are gruesome and scary. His employees, Caleb and Bertha, (who is blind) are simple, poor people who slave to make quality toys that the children will play with. Tackleton berates them, but their toys are purchased over his and that makes him even more bitter. Tackleton’s marriage plans are interrupted by the return of The Strange Gentleman — a man with a secret. After the work of the Crickets and the household Spirits, Tackleton gives up May to The Strange Gentleman, who is really Caleb’s long lost son (Bertha’s brother) and marries May’s mother — a woman more suitable to his age. But not before accusations are made and trust is broken all around and everyone is afraid that nothing will turn out on Christmas Eve morning. SONGS listed below.
PLAY DETAILS:
- 4M 4W 1TB 1TG 3either gender/any age + ensemble of 8-16
- Principals:
- MARY (DOT) PEERYBINGLE (20) — short, chubby, optimist, fair, young
- JOHN PEERYBINGLE (40) — tall, 6’6” bewhiskered, a Carter or Carrier
- TILLY SLOWBOY (15) — foundling, Peerybingle’s live-in nanny.
- RUPERT TACKLETON (42) — domestic ogre, children’s implacable enemy, a toy merchant who hates toys, children and women. Should be within a year of age to JOHN. Everything is veiled in sarcasm. He thinks himself a normal and gregarious man. (He sees no difference between himself and others) He doesn’t like to accept thanks. Walks with a slight limp, due to a bent back.
- JIMMY JEDDLER (16) — an eager lad with an irksome laugh. Peerybingle’s carter apprentice, lives in the stables, earnest, hardworking, but dull around adults. He comes alive when around TILLY
- THE OLD GENTLEMAN (O.G.) (23) — (EDWARD PLUMMER) a homeless man of some means. appears as a youngish 60-65, but out of disguise is actually close to MAY’s age (CALEB’s son)
- CALEB PLUMMER (40) — small, shabbily dressed, dingy faced eternal optimist; always making the best of any situation.
- BERTHA PLUMMER (19) — his blind and all-knowing daughter
- MAY FIELDING (20) — Very Pretty, childhood friend of DOT.
- MRS. FIELDING (42) — little querulous chip of a lady
- CRICKETS — one for each of the households
- —#1 The Genius of Hearth and Home: potent spirit, ageless, dressed in black @ PEERYBINGLES, appears in human form when needed; otherwise all we hear is a chirp;
- —#2 @ PLUMMER’s home: ditto #1;
- —#3 @ TACKLETON’s. He is ignored so no such blessings pervade the house until the Dream where CRICKET #3 joins forces with CRICKETS 2 & 1 to change TACKLETON and recall JOHN.
