Script by Katherine Farmer and Gayanne Ramsden King
Music by Diane Baker Drinkall
Lyrics by Kendra Lowe
Arrangements by Eda Ashby
The classic story by the Brothers Grimm of a donkey, a dog, a cat, and a rooster — who are cast aside at the beginning of the play and told that they are “too old to be of any use.” In the adventures that follow, they discover that they can all sing very well together and so they decide to go to Brementown to earn their living as performers. On their way through the forest, they happen upon a house full of robbers and, quite unwittingly, they succeed in scaring the robbers away. They then take over the robbers’ lair and decide to open it as an inn where they can sing, entertain guests, and earn their own way. This entertaining comedy hilariously brings home the message that we are never to old to be of good use and that you can indeed teach old donkeys, dogs, cats, and roosters new tricks.
Written to be performed by children for children, but adults can perform in the cast as well. The classic story by the Brothers Grimm of the four animal musicians, too old for anything, of no use to anyone, is brought to life in Story Theatre fashion.
